Attracting and retaining skilled healthcare professionals remains one of the most important priorities for regional communities. To help strengthen the future medical workforce in Mackay and the Isaac region, the Local Buying Foundation is supporting the AMAQ Junior Doctors Conference Mackay 2026, a professional development initiative designed to connect emerging clinicians with regional training and career opportunities.
Aligned with the Local Buying Foundation’s commitment to building regional capability and supporting workforce development, the conference addresses a key regional challenge: creating a pipeline of skilled professionals who choose to live and work in regional communities. By showcasing the professional, educational and lifestyle opportunities available in Mackay and the Isaac region, the initiative aims to encourage junior doctors and medical students to pursue regional career pathways.
The conference will bring together junior doctors, medical students, experienced clinicians and healthcare leaders from across Queensland for a program of education, mentoring and networking. Participants will gain insights into regional medical careers while developing practical skills and building professional connections that can support their future career decisions.
A key feature of the event is the Emergency Medicine Underground program, which provides participants with immersive, scenario-based learning experiences focused on high-acuity and complex emergency situations. Delivered in partnership with Queensland Mines Rescue, the training reflects the unique challenges clinicians may face in regional, rural and resource-sector environments, helping participants build capability in clinical decision-making, teamwork and emergency response.
Funding has been awarded because of the program’s potential to strengthen workforce attraction, capability and retention across the region. The conference will help participants develop clinical confidence, build relationships with regional healthcare providers and gain a greater understanding of the career pathways available through organisations such as Mackay Hospital and Health Service.
The initiative is supported by a strong network of regional partners, including Mackay Hospital and Health Service, James Cook University, the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network, Queensland Mines Rescue, Mackay Regional Council and Isaac Regional Council. Together, these organisations are working to create meaningful opportunities for emerging clinicians to engage with regional healthcare systems and communities.
Importantly, the benefits of the conference extend beyond the delegates themselves. By encouraging more healthcare professionals to train, work and build careers in regional Queensland, the initiative contributes to stronger local health services, improved access to care and healthier communities over the long term.
