The Bowen Basin Women in Leadership Program has been recognised with a Highly Commended award at the 2026 Service and Product Excellence in Rural and Remote Australia (SPERA) Awards.
Delivered by Regional Development Australia Greater Whitsundays with funding from the Local Buying Foundation, the program was recognised in the category recognising people, projects and organisations that place rural, regional and remote communities at the centre of their work.
The program supports women across the Bowen Basin to build confidence, capability and professional networks to help them step into leadership roles within their workplaces and communities. Through mentoring, practical learning and peer support, participants develop the skills and confidence needed to pursue new opportunities and create positive change.
The award reflects the strong outcomes achieved through the program, with participants reporting increased confidence, stronger leadership skills and expanded professional networks. The initiative is helping create a pipeline of future leaders while supporting more diverse voices in regional decision making.
Local Buying Foundation CEO Tracey Cuttriss-Smith said the recognition highlights the importance of investing in people and leadership capability across regional communities. “Strong communities need strong leaders.
