The Local Buying Foundation has been instrumental in supporting regional South Australian businesses in their transition to a net-zero economy. In collaboration with the Industry Capability Network (ICN) South Australia, LBF funded a series of free climate workshops aimed at equipping small and medium-sized enterprises with the necessary knowledge and tools to adapt to a low-carbon future.
These workshops, held in regional areas such as Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Roxby Downs, provided valuable insights into climate data expectations and sustainable business practices. Notably, larger companies like Nyrstar participated to share their perspectives, enhancing the learning experience for local businesses.
The initiative exemplifies LBF’s commitment to fostering sustainable business communities by investing in projects that drive workforce development, innovation and enhance the capability of local industries.
This collaborative effort between LBF and ICN SA highlights the proactive steps being taken to ensure regional businesses are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities presented by the net-zero transition.
“Vanessa and Alex coordinated a great Net Zero presentation at Port Augusta. It is evident that Vanessa is extremely passionate and knowledgeable relating to carbon management and net zero. The information provided was great and whilst I am relatively new in this space, feel confident that I can implement and apply to my business. I am very much looking forward to establishing a follow-up consultation with Vanessa to discuss my business plans into the future. Thank you very much!”

Preparing Businesses for the Net Zero economy
February 12, 2025
As industries worldwide transition towards a low-carbon economy, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to adapt, innovate and thrive. To support this transition, Industry Capability Network (ICN) South Australia is hosting three climate workshops across the state, helping businesses prepare for a net zero future.
These workshops, free for registering businesses, are funded with the support of the Local Buying Foundation, and aim to provide SMEs with the insights and strategies needed to navigate the opportunities and challenges of reducing carbon emissions and implementing sustainable practices.
Why Are These Workshops Important?
The global shift towards net zero is already reshaping supply chains, investment priorities and regulatory frameworks. Many large companies and government agencies now require suppliers to demonstrate sustainability commitments, meaning SMEs that take action now will be better positioned for future success.
By funding these workshops, the Foundation is ensuring that businesses, particularly those in regional South Australia, have access to vital resources that can help them remain competitive, attract new opportunities and contribute to a more sustainable economy.
What Will Businesses Gain?
The workshops will provide practical, actionable guidance, including:
✔ Understanding the transition to net zero and what it means for SMEs
✔ Strategies for reducing emissions and improving sustainability
✔ Insights into emerging business opportunities in a low-carbon economy
✔ How to meet supply chain and regulatory expectations for sustainability
