Recently in the NSW Funding Round 1, the LBFAC approved partial funding to support the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in its initiative to build capacity for managing the region’s evolving diversity. The project, titled Building Capacity to Manage the Region’s Evolving Diversity, responds to significant economic shifts in Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter, including the closure of Liddell Power Station in 2023 and the scheduled shutdown of BHP’s Mount Arthur mine in 2030. These changes have created uncertainty for local businesses, prompting MCCI to seek support for a part-time administrative role to help manage increased demand and provide continuity for its more than 200 members.

The funding will enable MCCI to employ an Admin Assistant from June 2025 to June 2026, with in-principle support for a second year subject to available funds and alignment with LBF priorities. This role is intended to strengthen the Chamber’s ability to respond to the needs of its members, many of whom are navigating the challenges of transitioning industries and shifting regional dynamics. MCCI’s proactive approach and reputation as an award-winning organisation position it well to lead this work, ensuring that local businesses are supported through a period of change.

This initiative builds on the Chamber’s history of delivering impactful programs, including the Upper Hunter Showcase, which has successfully promoted local businesses and increased regional visitation. While the Showcase focused on visibility and promotion, this new project addresses the operational capacity needed to sustain that momentum and respond to emerging challenges. The Admin Assistant will play a key role in coordinating member services, supporting events and maintaining the Chamber’s responsiveness to its community.

LBF’s assessment rated the project highly for impact, cost-effectiveness, alignment with Foundation priorities and reputation advantage. The funding application met all mandatory criteria and was recommended in full for the first year. Although the project scored poorly on Indigenous business engagement, it was recognised for its broader community benefit and potential to scale over time.

By supporting this initiative, LBF continues its commitment to strengthening regional business ecosystems and ensuring that local organisations like MCCI have the resources they need to adapt and thrive. The project reflects a practical and forward-looking investment in the resilience of Muswellbrook’s business community.
