The Local Buying Foundation is proud to announce funding support for a strategic new initiative aimed at unlocking the tourism potential of South Australia’s iconic Kati-Thanda Lake Eyre. Led by RDA Far North, the project will deliver a comprehensive accommodation audit and business case to support flood tourism in the region.
The project scored highly across key assessment criteria, including impact, alignment, agility and reputation advantage, and has received letters of support from both the SA Government and the Arabana Aboriginal Corporation.
The project represents a proactive response to a growing opportunity. With visitation surging by up to 40% during flood seasons and infrastructure upgrades expected to drive further demand, the region is poised for growth. However, current accommodation supply is limited, and without coordinated planning, local businesses risk missing out.
The initiative will deliver:
- An audit of existing accommodation in townships surrounding Lake Eyre
- A market analysis and feasibility study to guide private-sector investment
- A coordination mechanism for accommodation providers to manage demand
- Marketing recommendations to enhance regional visibility
The project runs from August 2025 to May 2026, and includes support for management and administration.
Local businesses stand to gain significantly from this initiative. By identifying gaps in accommodation supply and providing a roadmap for investment, the project will help attract more visitors, extend stays and increase regional spending. The coordination mechanism will also support small operators in managing peak-season demand and improving their marketing reach.
Importantly, the project is open to all businesses in the region and is designed to be inclusive, scalable, and sustainable. It will help ensure that the Outback Communities Authority can fully capitalise on the natural wonder of Lake Eyre and the economic opportunities it brings.
